現代日本画壇の最高峰、千住博。その名を世界に知らしめた代表作「ウォーターフォール（滝）」シリーズと並び、深淵な美を湛えるのが「タイドウォーター（潮汐）」シリーズです。
本作「タイドウォーター 夜奏」は、その名の通り、夜の静寂の中で奏でられる潮の満ち引きを、扇という独自のフォーマットに凝縮した稀少な一点です。
■ 扇面に宿る宇宙
扇形という限定された空間は、千住の手によって無限の広がりを持つ小宇宙へと昇華されています。幾重にも重なる波の層は、千住ならではの深みのあるブルーのグラデーションで表現され、月の光を浴びて煌めく潮騒の調べが聞こえてくるかのようです。夜の海が持つ、厳しくも美しい静けさが画面全体を支配しています。
■ 千住博の「静」の世界
作家が追求し続ける「静けさ」の境地が、この作品には色濃く反映されています。滝の轟音が「動」の象徴であるならば、タイドウォーターは「静」の極致。寄せては返す波の音、潮の匂い、そして夜の闇。それらを極限まで研ぎ澄まされた筆致で描き出し、鑑賞者を深い瞑想へと誘います。

Hiroshi Senju stands at the pinnacle of the contemporary Japanese painting world. Alongside his celebrated Waterfall series, which established his name internationally, his Tidewater series embodies a profound and compelling beauty.
The present work, Tidewater: Yaso, is a rare and singular piece that, as its title suggests, condenses the ebb and flow of the tide as it unfolds in the silence of night into Senju’s distinctive fan format.
A Universe Within the Fan
The limited space of the fan-shaped surface is transformed by Senju into a microcosm of infinite expansiveness. Layer upon layer of waves is rendered in the deep, nuanced blue gradations characteristic of the artist, creating the impression that one can almost hear the music of the waves glittering beneath the moonlight. The austere yet beautiful stillness of the nocturnal sea dominates the entire composition.

This work powerfully reflects the state of “stillness” that the artist has continued to pursue throughout his career. If the roar of a waterfall represents the realm of movement, Tidewater embodies the ultimate expression of stillness. The sound of waves advancing and receding, the scent of the sea, and the darkness of night are rendered through an exceptionally refined brushwork, inviting the viewer into a state of profound contemplation.
千住博（せんじゅ ひろし）プロフィール
日本画家。1958年、東京都生まれ。東京藝術大学で日本画を学び、古来の日本画技法と抽象表現主義に根ざしたミニマルな表現を融合させた作品を制作している。壮大なスケールの滝や崖を描いた作品で国際的に知られ、ニューヨークを拠点に国内外で幅広く活動している。
1982年、東京藝術大学美術学部絵画科日本画専攻を卒業。1984年、同大学院修士課程を修了し、修了制作が東京藝術大学に買い上げられる。1987年、同大学院後期博士課程の単位を取得して満期退学し、研究制作が東京大学に買い上げられる。
1995年、第46回ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレにおいて、絵画作品では東洋人として史上初となる名誉賞を受賞。その後も、国内外の主要な美術館や国際展で作品を発表し、世界的な評価を確立した。
2007年から2013年まで京都造形芸術大学学長を務め、2011年には軽井沢千住博美術館が開館。大徳寺聚光院、同別院、フィラデルフィアの松風荘、高野山金剛峯寺など、国内外の寺院・文化施設の襖絵や壁画も手がけている。
2016年、外務大臣表彰を受賞。2017年、第4回イサム・ノグチ賞を受賞。2021年、作品《瀧図》（高野山金剛峯寺障屏画）に対して第77回恩賜賞および日本藝術院賞を受賞。2022年、日本藝術院会員に任命された。
現在、日本藝術院会員、京都芸術大学教授、東京国立博物館アンバサダー、軽井沢千住博美術館館長などを務める。
