    This oil painting by the French artist André Cottavoz depicts a vibrant poinsettia arrangement.

    The poinsettias, with their fiery red bracts spread wide, are arranged in a vase together with rich green leaves. The pale blue vase at the center introduces a refreshing coolness amid the powerful palette of red and green. Combined with the bright background, it further enhances the poinsettias’ festive brilliance.

    One of the work’s greatest attractions lies in Cottavoz’s characteristic matière, created by applying paint in thick, vigorous layers, and in his dynamic brushwork. Shades of red, deep green, white, and blue animate the surface, conveying the poinsettias’ vitality and substantial presence. Although the forms of the flowers and leaves remain recognizable, the emphasis on the resonance of brushwork and color reveals the distinctive appeal of the neo-figurative painting that Cottavoz pursued.

1922年　フランス南東部サン＝マルスランに生まれる
1939年　リヨンの美術学校（エコール・デ・ボザール）で本格的に絵画を学ぶ
1953年　フェネオン賞を受賞、パリで初の個展を開催
1972年　東京・大阪など日本国内で展覧会を開催
1987年　初来日を果たすなど、日本国内でも多くの個展を開催
2005年　フランスのマニェリ美術館にて大規模な回顧展を開催
2012年　逝去（享年89）

【作家について】
ボナールの流れをくむ具象表現を継承しつつ、ジャン・フサロらと共に「リヨン派新具象」を形成した中心人物の一人です。絵具を厚く塗り重ねて物質感を強調する独自のスタイルを確立し、現代具象画家の第一人者として高く評価されました。
